The future of Land Rover Defender 2020? We will get to that in a second, but first let's look at the current one.
Land Rover introduced the Defender in the UK in 1992. The Defender was designed to compete with the Peugeot Citroen C2, which has a reputation for being one of the best car makers in the world. As it happened, the Defender was never able to catch up with the big boys and was sold very poorly.
The Defender has been upgraded a lot since then and there are several different versions available. Now its successor – and arguably its best product ever – are going to be released to the first users.
We have been told that the Defender will come with a number of enhancements, including new bodywork, a higher-performance engine, a better suspension system and a host of other changes. It also looks like it will be a much more powerful car. So what do we think?
The Defender itself has never been hugely popular with RVs, but we suspect this will change for the good. If it performs as well as we think it will, then it's an excellent choice of a vehicle for recreational driving. We think it could be worth considering for use as a fleet vehicle, too.
So what do we think of the Defender? Well, firstly, we can't see a reason why it couldn't be as strong as the new Citroen. With the engine and chassis improvements, we imagine it should be able to achieve a similar level of performance. It certainly has more power than the old model, which means it should be able to perform better on all fronts.
In terms of handling and comfort, we suspect the Defender will be the same as it was before – with a few tweaks here and there. But even if it's as good as the original, we still think it's going to be a good buy.
If you're looking to buy an SUV, then the Defender may well be the one for you. Although we are impressed by the price, we still think that Land Rover's competition is better. for the money, so that's why we're giving it a three star rating.
If you're looking at the Defender for your first off road vehicle, then we think the choice of two competing models is actually going to give you a good idea of what we think about it. If you prefer Land Rovers over anything else, then we suspect that the Defender will be just right for you. It's a good, reliable off road car that you won't really need much assistance with, but that will still feel good to drive.
So we've done a test drive of the Defender with a number of its competitors – and it performed reasonably well. Although the results were less than brilliant, we still think it was pretty good value for money and the Defender is a good purchase.
We think that Land Rover has a very good reputation for creating good off road vehicles. The Defender fits into that tradition and although it might not be as strong as the latest models of the brand, it does look like it will be able to keep up with the latest models. It's certainly a strong contender for the top spot.
So, will the Defender live up to the hype that's been created around it? Will it match up against any of the best in the range?
We think that it could, and we're sure that when we go on test drives we will find that it's a fantastic vehicle. The Defender will offer many years of hard driving pleasure with a small price tag attached to it.
